Problems in Install/Setup phase:
Setup program aborts for a crash
When a visual basic program, like the setup of trlm 2009, has a crash under Windows Vista the reason is problaly the presence of un updated visual basic files in your computer.
You should download and perform the setup for updated visual basic 6 run time files:
Setup of Visual Basic 6 run time files (1.1 Mb)
Instruction: start (run) above file. When the program will ask to you the folder where extracting files, you choose the Desktop.
Now, on the desktop it will be created a file named: "vbrun60sp6.exe". Start also this vbrun60sp6.exe program.
At end you can remove the vbrun60sp6.exe file from desktop.
Remark: this operation is always useful when you get crashes from some visual basic program under windows Vista
I get the error: "object active X has not been registered"
To reduce the size of TRLM 2009 setup program, I omitted some visual basic files. These files are present in 99 % of computers, anyway if you are in that 1% and you got an error mexage about missing or bad registering of some active x (like comdlg32.ocx), you can solve this problem performing this pre-installer with run times for trlm 2009:
Pre Installer of run times for trlm 2009 (2 Mb)
Once you installed above pre-installer, you can retry to install the real trlm2009 setup.
Windows Vista stops trlm 2009 setup
Under Windows Vista there is the feature named "User Account Control (UAC)".
This Vista feature could disturb trlm 2009 setup with continue permit requests.
Many people prefers disables that feature, if you wish disable it, too, you can find here the instructions about how do:
How Disable User Account Control under Windows Vista
Level Manager aborts with a crash
If you get very often crashes with TRLM and you have Windows Vista, it could be a well-known bug. Under windows vista the visual basic programs (like TRLM 2009) have a crash if you use the wheel of mouse while mouse pointer is over Level Manager windows.
Some people suggests to solve this problem chaning a setting about mouse: Control Panel->Mouse->Wheel and now select "Move following number of rows" setting "2" as value.
But in the reality, in many circustances this solution doesn't work, so my suggestion is simply to avoid using mouse wheel while you are using TRLM under Windows Vista
Problems in first Execution of TRLM 2009
If TRLM 2009 has a crash, you should follow the instruction about Update Visual Basic run-times file under Windows Vista in previous chapter.
About other mexages of errors, you could receive mexages about missing folder of previous (old) level archive.
These messages are not a real problem, probably you had some old level archive files (.trl) but the folder where the custom levels were stored have been removed from you many time ago.
When you get above error, TRLM 2009 will start with an empty new level archive.
Remark: if you get a bug in first execution and when you try to launch newly trlm you get always the installation level editor phase, you could try to download and install the Gold version of TRLM 2009.
The gold version contains all necessary files to play custom levels and the installation is faster and less problematic.
For this reason it's advisable to use the gold version if you are a beginner, because it's more easy install all necessary avoiding error mexages and problems
Problems adding a Level
When you add a level in Level Manager you could get following errors:
Level Manager froze when you click on [Done] button
This is an old bug with some Next Generation level.
You should update trlm downloading last update with menu command [Tools->Check for online updates for TRLM].
Once trlm will be updated the problem should disappear.
Remark: if you get above error also using last update of TRLM, advise me, please. You can send a report about level bug with Send a Report about a Level
Missing .tom or .tr4 files
A level to be played have to contain or .tr4 files, or at least .tom files. TRLM is able to convert tom files in .tr4 files to get playable levels.
If you receive above mexage this means there is no level to play in zip file you added.
This situation could happen for different reasons:
- You missed to download or to add in [Add new level] window, some .zip or .rar file.
- The level is in "project" format.
The project format is a way used only for demonstrative levels exchanged between level builders.
In project format could be missing .tom or .tr4 files, but it should be always preset at least a project file (.prj) .
To transform a .prj file in a .tom file you should start winroomedit.exe or ngle.exe program
and then load the project file and link the .wad file and the .tga file.
TRLM 2009 currentl doesn't support project level, so if you are not expert it's better to avoid to use levels in project format.
Anyway if you was able to create a tom file from the .prj file using winroomedit or ngle, then you could add in [Add new level] window of level manager the .tom file you created and trlm will be able to add this level to play it.
- The level is for UNofficial editor.
The level editor (TRLE) is the official editor, and it works to build levels for an engine similar to Tomb Raider The Last Revelation, while the unofficial levels have been built to work with tomb raider 1 or 2 or 3 or The Chronicles (tomb5).
In these level there are no .tr4 or .tom files but only .tr2 or .trc files.
Currently trlm doesn't support UO (unofficial) custom levels
Missing Tomb_NextGeneration.dll file
Really this is not a real error but only a warning.
Some leveles, named Next Generation or TRNG levels, should use a library named Tomb_NextGeneration.dll.
If level manager finds one of above levels where it's missing the Tomb_NextGeneration.dll file, trlm will advise about this missing.
The level could work, however, since trlm 2009 has own tomb_nextgeneration.dll to add in levels where it is missing.
Anyway, as general rule, it should be better if level builder added the Tomb_NextGeneration.dll they used to build their level because in this way we could be sure it will work fine.
Differently, when the .dll is missing, trlm2009 will add the own library but this could have a version different than that foreseen for that level.
Found Tomb_NextGeneration.dll in TREP level
This is only a warning to signal an anomalous situation, anyway it's not a real problem if you have updated trlm 2009 with last updates.
In first version trlm2009 was confused for the presence of TRNG library in TREP level (there is no reason to add Tomb_NextGeneration.dll in TREP levels) and it believed that level was a trng level, while it was a TREP level.
That mistake caused problems, but with last update trlm 2009 is able to recognize when the level is a real TRNG or a TREP level and when it will find a TRNG libeary in a TREP level, trlm will simply delete the TRNG library.
Problems playing a Level
The savegames disappear
The game is very slow
The game crashes

The savegames disappear
This problem is when after saving some savegame, you try to load those savegames some time later and the savegames are missing.
This happen when TRLM 2009 doen't recognize a trep level using the subfolder SAVE.
Theorically this bug should not ever happen since I fixed it, anyway if you find newly this bug, signal to me the name of this level and I'll add in on-line database the configuration file to fix this bug. Then, when some day later, you'll update trlm with command [Tools->Check for on-line updates for TRLM], the bug will be fixed automatically by Trlm for you and all others .

The game is very slow
If the game is very slow your computer could be not enough power to support some new levels with high requirements, anyway the reason could be simply you have the operative system Windows Vista in its original configuration.
Windows Vista is a very "heavy" operative system, and it could create many troubles for old games like tomb raider.
Luckly there are some operations to perform to speed up Windows Vista.
I suggest you to read following links to speed up Windows Vista, the result could be surprising!

The game crashes
In some circustances it could happen that the tomb raider crashes, anyway if this situation happens too frequently with same level it's a bit worrying.
Theorically the level of TRNG type should not ever have a crash, because they have an anti crash system to avoid this problem.
If you have a crash with a TRNG level (you see the type of level in green row below the level title in main window of TRLM 2009), you should singal this bug, adding in description field the content of text file named "last_crash#.txt" you find in trle folder used by trlm.
You can discover the level editor folder looking the preferences of level manager.
You should add the content only of the "last_crash" file with bigger number in its name.
If the level causes the crash is of other type, the reason could be some missing file in adding level phase. Try to remember if when you added the level you received some error mexages from TRLM.
If you have many crashes with some level it's always better to signal to me that level, using the Send a Report about a Level
